Understanding Paint Protection Film

What PPF is—and why drivers install it.

Paint protection film is a transparent urethane layer installed directly over painted body panels. Instead of relying only on a liquid product at the surface, PPF creates a physical barrier between the factory finish and the road.

The film is designed to absorb ordinary abuse from loose gravel, insects, salt, light scratches, and debris before that contact reaches the clear coat. SunTek Ultra also uses a self-healing top coat: fine marks in the film’s surface can respond to warmth from sunlight, the engine, or warm water.

PPF, ceramic coating, and vinyl are different products.

PPF is selected for physical paint protection. Ceramic coating improves water behavior, gloss, chemical resistance, and ease of cleaning, but it does not provide the same chip barrier. Vinyl wrap is primarily used to change color and style; ordinary vinyl is thinner and is not a substitute for clear PPF.

Professional installation begins with inspection, decontamination, and careful surface preparation.

Choose Your Finish

Invisible gloss or a satin transformation.

Both SunTek Ultra finishes provide paint protection. The difference is visual: gloss preserves the factory shine, while Ultra Matte changes gloss paint to a smooth satin appearance or blends with factory matte paint.

What PPF Does

A physical barrier where paint is vulnerable.

PPF is thicker than ceramic coating and is designed to absorb ordinary road wear before it reaches the paint. It is highly protective, but no film can make a vehicle completely damage-proof.

Helps protect againstRock chips, insects, salt, road debris, light scratches, stains, and daily surface wear.
Self-healing meansMinor scratches in the film’s top coat can respond to warmth from the sun, engine, or warm water. Deep cuts and punctures do not self-heal.
It cannot prevent everythingSevere impacts, dents, collisions, deep punctures, existing paint defects, and damage outside the covered panels remain possible.

Carsology Installation

Preparation determines the finish.

We inspect the paint first, clean and decontaminate every covered panel, then install the film in a controlled shop environment. Panel edges and patterns are handled according to the vehicle and selected coverage.

01 • Inspect Confirm paint condition, prior repairs, and coverage.

02 • Prepare Wash, decontaminate, and clean installation surfaces.

03 • Install Align and apply the film using vehicle-specific techniques.

04 • Finish Inspect edges, surfaces, and final fit before delivery.

Warranty & Care

Protect the protection.

SunTek recommends periodic care so the film can maintain its appearance and performance.

Wait before washing

Allow at least three days after installation before washing the vehicle so the film can settle properly.

Hand wash carefully

Use soap, water, and soft wash media. Avoid automatic brush washes and do not aim a pressure washer directly at film edges.

Use finish-safe products

Use non-abrasive products for gloss film. Matte film requires products formulated not to add gloss to the satin surface.

SunTek manufacturer’s 10-year limited warranty

Professionally sold and installed SunTek PPF Ultra and Ultra Matte are backed against qualifying cracking, bubbling, or yellowing. Restrictions apply, and coverage does not mean the film is guaranteed against impact damage, cuts, accidents, neglect, improper washing, or damage to the vehicle itself. Final warranty documentation is provided with eligible installations.

PPF Questions

Before you choose coverage.

Straight answers about gloss, matte, seams, removal, maintenance, and installation.

Will gloss PPF change my paint color?

SunTek Ultra is designed for high optical clarity and is nearly invisible once installed correctly. It can add a clean, uniform gloss, but it does not change the underlying paint color.

Can matte PPF turn gloss paint satin?

Yes. Ultra Matte changes the appearance of gloss paint to a smooth satin finish. For a consistent transformation, complete panels—and usually the full vehicle—should be covered.

Will PPF hide existing scratches?

PPF may visually soften very light defects, but it does not repair damaged paint. We inspect the surface first and discuss whether polishing or correction is appropriate before installation.

Can PPF be removed safely?

Professional removal from sound factory paint should not damage the finish when performed correctly. Repainted, repaired, failing, or previously damaged surfaces require additional caution and may carry different risks.

How long does installation take?

Smaller coverage may take one to two days. Full-front and expanded packages often require two to three days, while a full vehicle may require several days depending on size, complexity, preparation, and final inspection.

PPF or ceramic coating?

Choose PPF when impact and chip protection are the priority. Ceramic coating improves gloss, chemical resistance, water behavior, and ease of cleaning but does not provide the same physical barrier. They can also be combined using a coating made for PPF.
